About Me

melanieBorn in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Melanie currently lives in Miami, FL where she works as a freelance writer, editor, bookkeeper and administrator. She is known by her colleagues for her organizational and communication skills, and by her friends for her widely exaggerated stories, blinding camera flash, and fowl mouth.

A multinational world traveler from a young age, Melanie studied creative writing at The University of Central Florida, where she also developed an interest in photojournalism. Her work has been published in Orlando Weekly’s Drink Magazine, Urb Magazine, The Miami New Times, Smile for Camera, Miami Alive and Penduline Press.

Melanie was raised between Brazil and Switzerland, before moving to South Florida where she developed a fondness for language and communication. In 2008, while living in Orlando, Melanie began a small website as a project with her friends. Smile for Camera, as the project was affectionately named, quickly grew into one of the most popular and respected nightlife websites in the South East. In 2009 she relocated to Miami and continued to pursue her creative passions.

From 2009 to 2014, she produced a music video and managed the production a Winter Music Conference guide while ghostwriting content for many company websites across a wide range of industries. In 2013, Melanie founded Miami Alive, an online magazine dedicated to the culture and arts of Miami, which was recognized as one of 9 blogs to read now by WLRN and one of the best blogs for travelers to Miami by the Guardian UK. In 2015, Melanie stepped down from her position as editor at Miami Alive to focus on her freelance career.
